The village has a long and traditional history, and in the Tang Dynasty, it was an important centre of trade and commerce. Despite its cultural significance, the village itself remained poor, many of its houses built from wood and mud, and its streets dusty and dirty. However, in the last 10 years, new life has been given to old traditions, as China begins to revive its small villages by developing their tourist appeals and sustainability.
